Balgera Rosso di Valtellina doc 1999

The oldest family winery in the Valtellina area, in north Lombardy, a mythical position for the Nebbiolo or as it is called a chiavennascu, was founded in 1885. The strict regulations of this wine region require a minimum of two to three years of aging to get the reserve classification. The aim is to show the unique character of the local Nebbiolo, which requires a long stay in the wine cellar. The family of Paola Balgere has a more serious, prolonged and more traditional approach to their wines. A minimum aging of ten years in the barrels suggests that there is something special and valuable hidden in the basement of this winery. Approximately 70,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. Their wines are virtually an exception in modern winemaking, where patience is rewarded with marvelous aromas that combine the fruitiness and aristocratic patina of terroir aromas. While in the mouth an incredibly preserved freshness plays with a varietal fineness and creates exquisite balance in the mouth.

This 20-year-old wine is an absolute rarity in the market. It is very subtle, full of tertiary aromas, rounded tannins, and incredibly lively acids. It reveals the beauty of a traditional, aged Nebbiolo, which is most often only available to those who are willing to pay generously for aged Nebbiolo. It is very well suited to heavy dishes, red meat, and especially slightly fattest roasts, mostly catching on its seemingly subtle, but noticeable, corrugation and freshness. Hints of small red fruits and wildflowers, with a delicate spicy and vegetal note. In the mouth, it shows immediately a beautiful acidic trace and great vigor, it stretches with a beautiful body and good minerality, and with silky tannins.
